9 of Wands leads to 8 of Swords?

I pulled these two cards side by side in a reading recently, and thought I’ve read tarot for so many years, seeing them side by side still surprised me. While the soldier in the 9 of Wands is well guarded in his self-made fortress, the bound woman in the 8 of Swords seems hopelessly trapped by her sword prison. What was once the bandage protecting the head of the wounded soldier becomes the blindfold covering the eyes of the woman, preventing her sight. The...

Three of Swords

Do you cry? Are you a crier? I’m not. I don’t cry really. I mean, I cried when I put my beloved dog to sleep, sure. I cry at funerals. I cry if something terrible happens to someone I love. But generally, no. “There’s no crying in baseball…” is an expression that I can relate to most of life — There’s no crying at work, no crying over spilt milk… just don’t cry ok? Judgement

You know when your foot falls asleep… then you move it and you feel “pins and needles”? That’s the feeling of blood returning, of feeling returning. It’s uncomfortable at first. This card for me is about awakening – awakening from a comfortable slumber. That’s been going on in my life on multiple fronts for the past year. I keep thinking of the Kafka quote: “A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us”. I feel my own frozen sea within is breaking up, not from a book, but from life...

Six of Cups

Today’s card is the 6 of water from the Gaian tarot. 6 of cups is about the emotion of nostalgia. As humans we are social animals. Sometimes in our modern world we feel disconnected or alienated. We may long for a time in the past where we felt connection to others. We also imagine there was once an ideal sense of freedom from modern restrictions and an innocence we have perhaps lost. We wish for a community of like minded people to bring back what was lost. In this card’s image, we see a sisterhood of women naked in the ocean,...

Four of Swords

When jogging this morning I approached a political sign on someone’s lawn and I physically felt my heart constrict. I realize I am carrying a lot of stress just from the constant bombardment of opinions, articles, arguments, advertisements etc. related to the upcoming US presidential election. Whoever you support as a candidate, I think we can all agree this particular election cycle is very tumultuous. Right then and there I asked the earth to help me recycle that energy that I have been carrying around with me. I left it there on the...
